One of the things I hear frequently from clients is:
“When I finally have time to relax…I can’t….”
They aren’t thinking about work because they want to.
They aren’t mentally running through tomorrow’s to-do list on purpose.
They aren’t choosing to stay “on.”
Their nervous system simply hasn’t received the message that it’s safe to power down.
Rest Isn’t the Same as Restoration
Getting away from work doesn’t automatically quiet your nervous system.
You can:
- Sleep eight hours.
- Spend a day at the beach.
- Read a book by the pool.
- Enjoy a long weekend with family.
…and still feel mentally and emotionally exhausted.
Why?
Because physical rest and nervous system restoration are two very different things.
When we’ve been living with survival mode; chronic stress, anxiety, perfectionism, caregiving, trauma, or simply carrying the weight of everyone else’s needs, our nervous system can become accustomed to operating in a constant state of alert.
Your body may finally be still…
…but your nervous system may still be working overtime.
Why Rest Doesn’t Always Feel Restful
Many of us believe that if we can just get through this week…
or finish this project…
or make it to vacation…
then we’ll finally relax.
But that’s often not what happens.
Instead, we find ourselves lying in bed replaying conversations.
Checking emails “just one more time.”
Thinking about everything we need to do next week.
The body has stopped.
But the mind hasn’t.
When your nervous system has spent weeks, months, or even years operating in survival mode, it doesn’t automatically recognize that it’s safe simply because your schedule has slowed down.
That’s why slowing down and feeling calm aren’t always the same thing.
3 Ways to Help Your Nervous System Rest This Summer
Instead of trying to do everything differently, try choosing just one of these practices this week.
1. Give Yourself Permission to Rest
Many of us have become so accustomed to being “on” that we don’t know how to simply be.
One of the things I often encourage my clients to practice is learning how to flip the switch off.
When you finally sit down at the end of the day to read a book, watch a show, spend time with your family, or enjoy another wellness practice, notice what your mind does.
Does it begin making tomorrow’s to-do list?
Do you feel guilty for sitting down?
Do you think you should be doing something more productive?
When you notice those thoughts, gently acknowledge them. Then, in your mind, imagine placing every unfinished task, worry, or responsibility into a box.
Close the lid.
Carry that box to the top shelf in the back of a closet.
Close the closet door.
Then quietly remind yourself:
“This is my time to rest. The box will still be there tomorrow, and I’ll come back for it then.”
Now return your attention to the present moment.
Return to your book.
Return to your family.
Return to your evening walk.
Return to your cup of tea.
Be where your feet are.
Your to-do list isn’t going anywhere.
Neither are your responsibilities.
But this moment is.
Rest isn’t something we accidentally become good at.
The more often you practice “flipping the switch off,” the easier it becomes to transition from doing…to simply being.

2. Build Moments of Spaciousness
Most of us schedule appointments, meetings, workouts, and errands.
Very few of us schedule margin. Sanity happens in the white spaces! 😊
This week, intentionally create one small pocket of spaciousness each day.
Maybe it’s:
- eating lunch away from your computer
- sitting outside with your morning coffee
- taking a quiet walk without a podcast
- watching the sunset
- spending five minutes in silence before bed
These moments aren’t wasted time.
They’re opportunities for your nervous system to exhale.
3. Notice What Truly Restores You
Not everything that feels like a break is actually restorative.
Scrolling social media may distract you.
Running errands may feel productive.
But neither necessarily restores your nervous system.
Instead, ask yourself:
- What leaves me feeling lighter?
- What helps me feel more like myself?
- What activities genuinely fill my cup rather than simply fill my time?
The answers are often simpler than we expect.
When You’re Ready for a Deeper Reset
The three practices above are wonderful places to begin.
They teach your nervous system that it’s safe to slow down, rest, and reconnect with the present moment.
But sometimes the exhaustion isn’t coming from this week.
It’s coming from years of carrying stress, anxiety, trauma, perfectionism, or emotional burdens that your nervous system has never fully had the opportunity to process.
That’s where a Trauma Healing Intensive can be transformative.
Recently, one client came to an intensive after navigating a divorce, relocating, and starting over in a new career. Like so many people, she wasn’t just physically tired—she was emotionally carrying the weight of one life chapter ending while trying to begin another.
Following her intensive, she shared:
“I quickly shifted to peace and, surprisingly, a lot of confidence. I felt great.”
What touched me even more was what she wrote a few weeks later:
“I still have moments where I slip back into old patterns. But now I recognize them and know how to get out of them because of the work I’ve done.”
To me, that’s what healing looks like.
Not never struggling again…
But having the awareness, tools, and confidence to move through life differently.
If you’ve been feeling like your nervous system has been carrying more than it was ever meant to hold, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.
